New Iceland Volcanic Ash Cloud Image Shows UK Coverage

The ash is back. Fresh volcanic activity under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland has resulted in a fresh ash plume being pushed about 5.5km (18,000ft) into the air.

Weather conditions had led to a concentrated cloud of ash reaching northern parts of the UK.

Meteorologists say the ash cloud could remain over Europe for a further five days.  Air traffic chiefs said the UK will remain on lock-down until at least 7am tomorrow. But transport boss Lord Adonis last night forecast "significant disruption" for at least the next 48 hours. Air traffic control company Nats said the ash cloud is "moving around and changing shape".

European Car Hire Prices Set To Rise By 250%!

A car hire company is making a complaint to a Spanish car rental authority over the predicted summer hike in car rental prices.

micraAffordable Car Hire said the cost of hiring a vehicle was expected to soar in the peak season as firms struggled to meet strong demand with limited fleets.

Last winter, the average weekly car rental in Malaga was £65, the firm said. But Affordable has calculated that the price will rocket to at least £228 for the same car between July and August.

Sales and marketing director Nick Marney said the firm was so concerned by the price hike that it would lodge a complaint with AESVA – the association for rental vehicles in Andalucia.

"We will complain about the difference in prices,” he said. “The same vehicle is being sold for too low in the winter, and far too high a few months later.”

Marney added that price rises were being exacerbated because ‘buy back’ schemes run by manufacturers had stopped because of the recession, so rental firms had sold off cars at low prices. Banks were refusing to issue loans so firms were unable to buy new fleets, creating a shortage of cars when there was strong demand.

“Firms have become stuck in a vicious circle, and prices are going to skyrocket,” he said.

Spain is expected to be hit particularly hard by the price increase, because it has a large number of holiday destinations such as Malaga and Alicante with large villa markets, where tourists need cars.

Marney also urged travel agents wanting cars in Europe for the summer to start booking now.
