About USA Time Zones – View a map of USA Time Zones

Hi,

Just thought I would drop a little geography related knowledge today concerning the time zones used in the USA. As dull as it may sounds I do get quite a few messages asking for info on USA Time Zones and also asking for a Map of USA Time Zones. Well, for all you time zone herds out there I have put together a post that should help;

United States time zones

Standard time zones in the United States are currently defined at the federal level by law 15 U.S.C. The federal law also establishes the transition dates and times at which daylight saving time occurs, if observed. It is ultimately the authority of the Secretary of Transportation, in coordination with the states, to determine which regions will observe which of the standard time zones and if they will observe daylight saving time.

As of August 9, 2007, the standard time zones are defined in terms of hourly offsets from UTC.[1] Prior to this they were based upon the mean solar time at several meridians 15° apart west of Greenwich (GMT).

Only the full time zone names listed below are official; abbreviations are by common use conventions.
.
The United States uses nine standard time zones. From east to west they are;
Atlantic Standard Time (AST)
Eastern Standard Time (EST)
Central Standard Time (CST)
Mountain Standard Time (MST)
Pacific Standard Time (PST)
Alaskan Standard Time (AKST)
Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST), Samoa standard time (UTC−11)
Chamorro Standard Time (UTC+10).
Zones used in the contiguous U.S.
From east to west, the times zones of the contiguous United States are:

Eastern standard time zone: (EST; UTC−05; Zone R), which comprises roughly the states on the Atlantic coast and the eastern two thirds of the Ohio Valley.

Central standard time zone: (CST; UTC−06; Zone S), which comprises roughly the Gulf Coast, Mississippi Valley, and Great Plains.

Mountain standard time zone: (MST; UTC−07; Zone T), which comprises roughly the states that include the Rocky Mountains.

Pacific standard time zone: (PST; UTC−08; Zone U), which comprises roughly the states on the Pacific coast, plus Nevada.

Tips and Tricks to Save Time During Holiday Travel

Know Your Alternatives:  There's usually a tradeoff when choosing between a major or alternative airport and you should know the difference before booking.  In many cases, you'll gain convenience and accessibility in exchange for a smaller spectrum of flights.  Akron / Canton Regional and Dane County Regional are reliable alternatives for travelers that don't mind an hour drive to Cleveland or Milwaukee.  Additionally, Chicago Midway (Chicago), Oakland International (San Francisco), and John Wayne International (Los Angeles) are very close alternatives to the larger airports in their respective markets.

Patience is a Virtue:  Don't expect all of your Thanksgiving travel plans to happen without a hitch.  You may face a delay or be asked to make alternative plans at some point.  Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and build buffers into your itinerary to mitigate any one-off disruptions without jeopardizing your entire trip (and sanity).

Travel Light:  This is both a money and time saver for any Thanksgiving traveler.  Pack light to save on the fees and additional time required to check bags.  This will also make the next tip more valuable.

Online Check-In:  You should check-in online and print your boarding pass before heading to the airport, particularly if you are traveling light.  Alternatively, some carriers now allow you to check in from your smart phone and use a digital bar code that appears on the device screen to pass through security checkpoints.  Until that technology is more widely accepted, however, we recommend that you print out your boarding pass just in case.

Security Line Scramble:  This is the biggest bottleneck in any airport over Thanksgiving.  A little pre-planning can vastly cut down your individual time (unfortunately, it still won't help speed up the group in front of you).  Keep your ID and boarding passes in the same pouch or pocket, and your liquids, medication and other red flag items in an easily accessible compartment of your carry-on bag.  Always be prepared to take off your shoes, belt and/or large metal jewelry.  Your laptop needs a separate bin, and you best find a new home for the loose change in your pocket.

US to charge £9 for Esta compulsory travel entry form

The US government is to start charging UK travellers $14 (£9) to apply for permission to enter the country.

The compulsory Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) is free at present, but from 9 September visitors to the US will have to pay for it.

It lasts for two years; people who already have a valid form will not have to pay until their current one expires.

The scheme was introduced in January 2009 but was made mandatory from January 2010.

It applies to all 35 countries with US "visa waiver" status.

Promote tourism

The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form, which takes up to 72 hours to be approved, gives air passengers prior approval for entry to the US.

It replaced the green I-94 card which passengers have previously filled in on their flight into the US.

End Quote Martin Lewis MoneySavingExpert.com

Most people who fill in the form should receive approval from the US Department of Homeland Security within a few minutes.

But British Airways and American Airlines are advising travellers to apply at least 72 hours in advance.

Both airlines have said people without valid Esta forms or visas will not be allowed to board flights to the US.

The fee has been introduced to fund a programme which aims to promote tourism in the US and attract foreign spending.

Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, has urged people even considering a trip to the US to apply for a form now to beat the charge.

He said: "The security authorisation lasts for two years, so do it now and it'll be free if you travel in that time. Yet leave it for a month and you'll have to pay for it.
