La Tomatina tomato fight in Buñol near Valencia happens every year on the last Wednesday in August though the partying starts earlier in the week. The highlight of the festival is the tomato fight which takes place between 11am and 1pm on that day.
Every August on the last Wednesday of the month, thousands descend on the otherwise quiet village of Bunol near Valencia in Spain to hurl more than one hundred tons of tomatoes at each other.
According to tradition, female participants wear all white while the men wear no shirts.
Scores of cheap, inedible tomatoes are grown especially for the fight.
Rules dictate they must be squashed before they can be thrown.
The event forms the centrepiece of a week-long festival comprising music, parades, dancing and fireworks.
Over one hundred tons of tomatoes were hurled, squashed, splattered, lacerated, lobbed, crunched, catapulted and flattened during the fight. The festival is now in its 65th year.
